Choeung Ek was the main place of performance and mass grave of prisoners of Democratic Kampuchea, the regime of the Khmer Rouge, when it presided over the destiny of Cambodia from 1975 to 1979. It is located 17 km southwest of Phnom Penh and covers two hectares. Before its transformation into camp, Choeung Ek was a Chinese cemetery. When the Khmer Rouge took power, they created the largest center for security of the country which included the prison Tuol Sleng, in downtown Phnom Penh, for the torture and interrogation of prisoners and the camp of execution Choeung Ek, for prisoners of Tuol Sleng and other centers in the area (Panh, 2004). Of the 129 mass graves, about 80 have been excavated.
