Persepolis has two parts, Persepolis 1 and 2. The first part is about the young Marjane or Marji as she is called in the novel, and the second part is the story of her return. Young Marji’s view of the Islamic revolution is reflected in the first part. Marji was ten years old when the Islamic revolution happened and Marji’s view presents both the gender struggles of her age and the struggles that she faced in terms of the happenings around her. Young Marji who was studying in a co-education was seen to be gender segregated in order to continue her studies during the time of the Islamic revolution. She was made to wear a veil and came from a family that she considered to be quite liberal. The imposition of the veil was by itself an example of the authoritarian brutality. “We didn’t really like to wear the veil, especially since we didn’t understand why we had to” (Satrapi 3). The Islamist fundamentalists threated her growing years and she witnessed many of her friends and family face persecution. She admired her uncle greatly.

The death of her Uncle was what set off her rebellious tendencies. She went on to advocacy which was considered anti-religious leading her to situations where the family felt it in her best concern to move her away for studies elsewhere. She was sent to Vienna for her studies, and in her schooling years living in friends’ homes and on the streets, she almost died when she has the pneumonia. Her education in Visual communication gives her the right voice to represent all that went on in her life in her autobiography. She remembers details so vividly from her childhood, like the day she wanted to learn monopoly and how instead she was given the truth about her family and history. She writes in detail about her grandfather and portrays different characters in such detail that the reader is able to connect with every one of the characters. She represents some of the major events that were seen to change her societal structures and the people and reveal the hypocritical nature of family and neighbours. However, it is the political stability and authoritarian suppressions of the common men that impressed heavily upon one. The freedom which people take for granted is seen to be challenged in her everyday life and every one of her character and event representations are seen to reflect on this oppression.
