However, on the subconscious level, it can be seen that the king cleverly did not share an important fact about the drum and its use with the tortoise. Thus, while he kept his word by giving the tortoise what he wanted and he ensured that the magic drum would come back to him.

Similarly, in the story of the two brothers, the importance of hard work is emphasized. The story tells us that one who is willing to work hard will get his just rewards, while one who wishes to be a lotus eater would have to be content with what fate throws his way. In the same manner in the story of the greedy son, the wise old man recognizes the son’s genuine feelings when he creates Small Profit. In the same manner, he recognizes deceit when he creates Great Duty. Thus, on the subconscious level, it can be seen that selfless devotion gave the son profits through the fulfillment of all his desires, while greed gave him losses through Great Duty who took away Small Profits and left the repentant one behind. Thus, the individual grows and gains wisdom towards the end of each of the stories.
