The jazz styles which were practiced post war period can be considered to be the cool types as they were subdued in nature and shared many contemporaneous idioms related to Jazz. Various Jazz players, for instance, Paul Tanner and David Megill, were subdued with their choice of music and sonorities of tones while the likes of Gillespie and their followers were largely fiery in nature. In cool jazz, the frequently changes in notes and keys are less with moderate tempo compared to bebop. It was named Bebop due to the super fast expression of music which is hard to express with melodic lines and hence in order to maintain the punctuation and rhythm, chordal changes are maximum. Bebop often makes it hyperactive and cool jazz is soothing and chilling.
An example of extreme dense phrasing were numerous notes were played simultaneously to play a piece-CD timing is 6:33to 6:58.
Swinging toe tapping rhythm – an example is 0:33- 1:30.
Free jazz was coined in the year 1964, from the recording of Ornette Coleman where a new thing was described in the jazz which developed around that time. There is little or scanty understanding regarding jazz as music amongst the music fraternity at large. The less amount of information available could largely be due to the fact that there is absence of intellectual path or there is very little room for critical analysis which is otherwise a part of the other serious forms of art. The improvisation which has happened to jazz in recent times around the 20th century has seen that the styles of traditional analyses have been grossly defied and there is no written information regarding it through which various scholars can make efforts for transcription of music so as to tackle the various difficulties which are otherwise inherent to music which is based on recordings only. Very less attention is paid by the jazz musicians as well as the critics of jazz music towards free jazz as they do not like or approve things which are otherwise mated out in untraditional ways or techniques. Especially with regard to jazz, they do not want to make any compromise and are stringent about it. They would rather not have jazz consideration in any form, rather than subscribe to modern forms of jazz. They don’t consider this as free jazz but rather as anti jazz. This view point is very stringent and needs little changes with changing times and evolution and improvisation of music.
Neo classical aspects or models of music developed around the 20th century and has been extremely popular during the world wars where the music composers were drawing inspiration from the music which prevailed in the 18th century. A few of the music canon were also inspired from classic period and baroque period and thus at times it is also known as neo-baroque respectively. The neo classical concept with regard to jazz can be considered to be a corresponding reaction in response to the situation which prevailed in the 19th century. It resembles the cool jazz form.
There are a number of similarities and differences between smooth jazz and neo classical genre. While, one of them is involved with modern forms of hip hop, funk rock and roll as well as pop and other styles of music either partially or in combination, the neo classic genre was actually reflecting the traditional jazz. However, both have foot tapping rhythm which is smooth and slow.
