The privacy of data transmitted over the internet might be affected by several intrusion techniques like “sniffing” and “spoofing” (Atkins, 1997). Sniffing is the process of reading or retrieving traffic on the internet through unauthorized access techniques. In internet, sniffing is achieved by the use of software, by name, sniffer which grabs the traffic and data transmitted into and out of a computer that is attached to a particular network. Spoofing, on the other hand is quite worse than sniffing in which the data is not only read by the intruder but also modified in such a way that it appears to have originated from a different source. Owing to several illegal activities like spamming, hacking, sniffing and spoofing, users across the globe are hesitant to access internet. Social networking websites are fancied in the present information age. Almost all individuals have access to or have account in any one of social networking sites existing in the internet. Illegal actions by internet hackers create a serious threat to the privacy of users accessing especially these social networking sites, since these sites are meant to share personal information and it is in these sites, several users share their personal data.
While users encounter invasion of their personal information by using social networking websites, there exists another major form of invasion of privacy by the new media. It is nothing but the access of financial information of an individual. With emergence of electronic commerce, almost all transactions have become online, making the internet one of biggest market places of the globe.
