The model that is prevalent in the recent times can be traced to the ways in which traditional businesses distributed their products through various channels. As such, franchising can be defined as a collaborative evolution of the distribution channel and the importance of ‘collaboration’ being key in this regard. For the individual franchisee owner, therefore, it becomes important to adhere to the particular concept and models that are being used by the parent company. And from the franchisors’ perspective, the responsibility to guide the individual through the various specifications of running the business model is provided. Moreover, the franchisor provides training and continuous support to assist the new owner in all aspects of marketing and sales (Stokes & Wilson, 2006). This crucial aspect of franchising makes it one of the most preferred models for entrepreneurs in the present age. In noting, the benefits of franchising the entrepreneur can observe the various support systems that are facilitated by the franchisor. And for an established brand, the model can be fruitful in the long run. However, on the flip side, it becomes important for the entrepreneur to note the location effectiveness of a brand. For some of the national and international brand products, the customers in a particular area might not be interested. The implication of proper market survey and the opportunities in the market is important for the entrepreneurs to consider (Dew, et al., 2009).
The success of the franchisor model can be seen in the number of franchisors in Australia, which has considerably increased over the years since 1998. Till 2012, there were around 1180 franchisors in Australia. In keeping with the success of the franchising model, the 2011 sales turnover of the franchise business model were observed to be at nearly 62 billion dollars. The largest share among such franchisors was enjoyed by the retail sector, followed by the food service industry (FCA, 2012). Together with the various benefits offered by the social media and digital communication systems, franchisee owners have been able to gain considerable advantages which entrepreneurs are looking at the various franchise options as alternative models for a successful business. From the franchise owner’s point of view, crucial considerations have to be made in relation to adjusting to the guidelines of the parent company. The managerial skills of the owner become important in this regard. Because opening a franchise is an investment in itself, it becomes crucial to weigh in the various family and emotional issues that might cause hindrance in the future for the successful operation of the business (Wiklund & Shepherd, 2005).
By noting the above observations, this report would consider the option of franchising for entrepreneurship and look at the various opportunities in the fast food industry around the globe as also in Australia. The report would discuss the opportunities provided by Chicken Treat.
