The aim of this essay is to analyze the theme of stereotypical gender roles in reference with Othello by Shakespeare and Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. Various examples are evident for stereotypical gender roles and gender issues in the two stories. In both the selected literatures, characters have referred to gender rules and the impact of these roles in the relevant settings. As a thesis statement for this essay, various stereotypes are addressed by the characters of Othello and Kite Runner, in which one perceives the notion of women empowerment and the other perceives the notion of male empowerment through different yet similar cultural backgrounds.

In Othello, Desdemona is the main leading character of the plan, followed by Emilia, her maid. Both the characters are not in alignment with the typical stereotype naïve women wrapping up in the lives of their lover for realizing the reality. In this play, women show more confidence and have the ability of freely communicating with their husbands as per the basic necessity (Matz 262). They tend to be challenging the stereotypical notion set by their husband lacking loyalty or intelligence for stating their opinion. However, in the play, men can be seen adhering with stereotypes to be demanding, womanizing, vulgar, controlling and masculine. In this play, the roles of gender are different from one another but this does not reflect the lack of evidence to support stereotypes. Both the genders have been criticized and slanderously remarked with respect to their gender and individual personality (Matz 268). However, their reactions are different all across the play. In addition to the stereotypes of female, there is an existence of many male stereotypes in the current society. In the play, men can be seen adhering with the stereotypes to display rage, jealousy, control, manipulation and masculinity. They are aligned with the typical profile of macho men in the specific era. In addition, when talking about women, they tend to follow a discriminatory and prejudicial approach using words such as fond, foul, blank and strumpet for the description of women. In the current modern era, the overall translation can be done in vulgar and slanderous terms (Matz 272). In the play, it is evident that men have control over all social aspects, specifically including the lives of women.
