There are many definitions of culture. Gudykunst and Kim (1992) see culture as the systems of knowledge shared by a relatively large group of people. Porter and Samovar (1994) provide more details of the shared common knowledge. They believe that the core is an accumulative deposit of knowledge. This also includes experiences, beliefs, values, attitudes, meanings, hierarchies, religion, notions of time, roles, spatial relations, and concepts of the universe. They also emphasize that the forming of a culture requires a group of people in the course of generations through individual and group striving (Porter & Samovar, 1994). Simultaneously, Hofstede, Hofstede, and Minkov (1991) defines culture as “the collective programming of the mind distinguishing the members of one group or category of people from others” (Hofstede et al., 1991, p. 6).
Thus, culture may be defined as the word, which covers different aspects in our life and it has been defined by different anthropologists in different ways.
In the words of anthropologists, the culture may be termed as an umbrella which can lead to create a covering on the social activities and it may even has an influence on the behavior of the person, the communication, the relationships and other different social aspects. Thus, it is important to have different studies related to the culture which can lead to the investigation on the influence of the core cultural values and beliefs about the Chinese culture. Culture is something that has a large influence on the students.
Culture is a word which can have a large influence on the life of the person. There are different definitions of culture given by different anthropologists. According to Hall (1969), culture has been defined as the manner in which the life of different people may be affected. It may be defined as the sum of the learned behavior patterns, different attributes and material things. In addition to this, he also considered that the culture is something that may not be innate, but it is something that is to be learned. Culture may be defined as something that a person learns and share. Therefore, there may be a number of studies which investigate the influence of the culture on different patterns of life. Thereby, it may be defined as the sum of the behavior of the person.
Though definitions of culture vary, however, the basic foundation of each definition is the same. There are three common elements in those definitions: level of the group, consistency, and sharing. The group level identifies the range of the culture. Consistency of the behavior presents the characteristics of the culture. In the end, the shared behavior shows the group level logic and thinking process. The following table shows the detailed definitions of cul
