The leadership of Linda as the executive director and functionally general manager of ACCA is realized as the supportive leadership style. The fact that majority of Linda’s experience is in the leadership, project coordination, mentoring roles and management, the disciplines have made her more inclined towards providing the support within the management and business along with project related decision makings instead of artistic creation (Schlesinger, 2010). The executive director’s leadership is in contrast with the leadership style of the artistic director. Linda strives towards the fulfilment of the vision and objectives that are shared by Max.
Hence, although she holds a substantial power and authority within ACCA, she is unable to exercise autonomy and bring innovation or creativity within the business processes and artistic endeavours (Stein, 2016). The dominant leader as the artistic director of ACCA offers executive director with the little to no option but to meet the objectives and goals developed by the artistic director. This not only reduces the scope of leadership to the artists but also limits the creativity scope across the organization.
Hence, the leadership of the board of directors, artistic director and general manager can be highlighted as completely different from one another in terms of the style, behaviour and roles (Sutherland and Gosling, 2010). This has led to the understanding that while different leadership styles are essential for the effective functioning and sustainability of the organization, increased attention is required on the sharing of leadership and autonomy throughout the arts organization (Bilton, 2007). The fact that the primary business of the arts organization are generated from the art works and artistic creations of the artists, these individuals are not given either rewards and recognition or the leadership to create the visual arts solely from their own will and their choice of art forms.
