Mengzi has constantly focused on the concept of “qi” (vital force). According to various researchers on Chinese philosophy, “qi” is an important concept which gives a deep meaning to life and human existence. It is crucial to Mengzi’s idea of self-cultivation and fulfillment. Mengzi has clearly stated the fact “qi” is refined through amalgamation of several acts of righteousness and benevolence (Ivanhoe, 2002). By doing that, he relates the life of a person (who tries his best to refine his “qi” through the unnatural) with a farmer who attempts to speed up the process of the corn growth constantly forcing it upwards. Here we can compare the idea of Mengzi and Xunzi and can analyze the fact that how humans thinking grow. Mengzi thinking for human growth is just like how a sprout slowly grows into a plant, but this growth requires a healthy environment and cultivation by the farmer without which is impossible. Mengzi believed that human nature requires guidance and teaching for their development and to enhance the quality of righteousness and wisdom (Richards, 2013).

On the other hand, Xunzi believed that human thinking does not require any kind of learning; it is some kind of inborn or congenital quality in them to learn. Mengzi and Xunzi views on human nature are completely different. According to Mengzi humans need to be encouraged to develop their nature, on the other hand Xunzi view is that with the passage of time, Humans will understand in what they are lacking and will overcome faults. Xunzi explains that human requires moral principles to development their nature just as a bent or twisted wood requires some time and work on it to become straight again. It is a quality of a man that he would not follow those teaching or guidance that not complies with moral and ethical attitudes. Humans are capable of judging between right and wrong and do portray a sign of disgust or contempt towards things which they won’t feel are morally or ethically correct (Richards, 2013). These could be termed as a form of righteousness. However, as the symbol of sprout clearly suggests, humans do tend to go towards dispositions which are virtuous. Our moral and ethical virtues are often inconsistent in nature.
