It is almost as if it is like the Faraday effect, but where the faraday effect describes the light changes in the context of polarization and the reflection intensity as understood from a magnetic surface, in the case of the Kerr effect that MOKE operation on it is understood to be changes because of light reflected from magnetic surfaces.
