Status in New Zealand: There are many research groups in New Zealand which work on different aspects of stem cell research and therapy. However there are many hurdles which should be overcome to make stem cell therapy a routine medical treatment. Table below represents the scenario of incidences of some diseases which affect the health of New Zealanders. This indicates that stem cell based therapy may have a great potential for treatment of these diseases (The Ministry of Research, Science and Technology, 2006, p. 49).
