The original logic behind genetic modification of seeds was to enhance the positive characters of the plant like increase in yield stability and productivity and reduce the negative characters like low pest resistance, high sensitivity to abiotic factors (Qaim 42). This led to development of seeds which were claimed to be both disease resistant and less intensive on pesticides. However, these seeds turned out to have several other issues starting from increased water use to social boycott. While there are studies that show no statistical difference between organisms exposed to GM food and non-GM food (EFSA, GMO 1), artificially modified food products have lacked a certain social acceptance. Accordingly, the political pressure around the issue has increased significantly to restrict the use or import of GMOs in agriculture to protect the interests of both farmers and consumers.

This paper tries to explore the issues revolving around use of genetically modified seeds from different angles like environmental, political, agricultural and behavioral etc. The working hypothesis of the paper is that GMOs do more harm to the economic and environmental system than benefits.
