Josef Muller-Brockmann, the work JOB by Alphonsa Mucha-Art Nouveau, and the Baroque Howard Castle are three art designs that were selected for analysis. The first design was analysed using the factors of influence such as the industrial revolution, the early twentieth century art movement and the post war period. The second design the Art Nouveau was analysed based on the visual culture that it came to be developed in and the technology improvement. The final element of the Baroque style focused on how religion and royalty drove them.
Art designs are seen to be influenced by many elements around them, such as the existing art designs, the contemporary influence, society and political elements. This work considers three different designs and assesses the contributions that led to those designs in history. The significance of the designs is reflected on. The three designs considered are the Josef Muller-Brockmann’s grid, the Art nouveau movement and the Baroque movement.
The design chosen here is the Josef Müller-Brockmann’s Grid Systems. It was presented as part of Graphic design in the post-war period and the influence on graphic design has been observed from influences even before that. The design as presented here shows much meticulous detail. There are multiple columns and field based grids which can be reused in both 2D style and 3D style of works.
“Swiss designer Josef Muller-Brockmann established himself as one of the most important and prolific voices of twentieth century graphic design, setting up his own studio in Zurich in 1936 and working until his death in 1996 for numerous clients, creating a countless quantity of design for posters, which he considered “barometers of social economic, political, and cultural events, as well as mirrors of intellectual and practical activities” (Purcell, 2006, p.1). Art Nouveau was a form of art and architecture that draws more from the decorative style of works. It was also known by various names such as Glasgow Style, and in Germany, it was known as the Jugendstil.
