Using the article by Goh (2012) given out in class and Johnson as starting point, discuss the key issues relating to ‘learner strategies’ and their implications for teachers of ELT.

Language and strategy experts believe that language learners can explore their learning potential and can achieve the flexibility in language speaking through proper planning and use of strategies. (Goh, C.,C., M., 2012)

There are certain characteristics that a learning strategy must possess in order to give maximum benefit to the learner. Strategies must be deliberate incorporating intellectual, social and intuitive processes. By making inferences, learner can monitor their own social behaviour and the ability to understand the comprehension. These kinds of strategies are controlled by metacognition that means awareness and understanding of one’s own thought processes. The learners should be able to comprehend what they read or listen or should be able to express the meanings through effective speaking and writing. This level of metacognition depends on the amount of attention given by the learner to various aspects of learning strategy. This attention may vary in case of solving a comprehensive problem on a non-familiar topic when compared to talking someone face-to-face on a familiar topic. To get better extract out of this, strategies or methodologies should be utilized individually or in an intelligent and organized manner to shape a system of processes for accomplishing a superior correspondence. For example, when learners interprets and realize that they have made a mistake in interpretation, they should revisit their strategies and retry with another plan. One who fails to do so may not arrive at an acceptable or accurate interpretation. Knowledge about and utilization of distinctive strategies might be mutually developed and managed by learners cooperating together (Goh, C.,C.,M., 2012).

Learners basically can follow two types of strategies, one which improves the command on your language such as remembering and iterating the vocabularies and the other which can enhance the communication during language use. Although it may not directly contribute to language development, it is better to avoid being silent during conversations. The utilization of strategies depends on three factors: the learners’ ability, the tasks they complete and the surroundings in which these strategies are utilized. Reports from researchers clearly indicate that high proficiency learners are more aware about their thought processes than the low proficiency individuals. In reality, learning strategies can be general to broad set of actions or specific confined to small tasks (Goh, C.,C.,M., 2012).
