Now I was a little sceptical about using Adobe Muse considering that I had not made use of it in the past, I have always developed elements either from the scratch or by making use of other template forms. The template forms were the easiest for me to use in the past compared to developing site from scratch. The most common complaints that are usually associated with using template forms are that these are seen to be more generic in nature. So a more general purpose use and look is created and there might really not be anything unique in such a creation. Now for the display of travel photography’s such as I intended to do in my site should not have something so generic. However, I don’t believe that the disadvantages associated with the use of generic components are that worse. In fact, in using templates, a user can always make some modification that reflects their uniqueness more than anything. Also Adobe Muse presents for more ways to extend the functionality of my website. Consider the preloader functionality in the website. Having a preloader is a good choice for a personal site, especially one that has to display many collections of photographs. It enables the viewer to get ready to view the photographs and at the same time serves the dual function of retrieving and updating photographs in real time, as I have uploaded them.
Secondly, the widget library of Muse presents many stylistic yet simple navigation bars and also functional prototypes. Most of these are very easy to use, and they could be dragged and dropped into place. As a person using Muse for uploading photographs I agree with some of the comments that I read about the features of Muse before I started using it. “One thing that Muse is missing is the ability to have placeholders for images when you’re just having ideas or perhaps the pictures aren’t ready yet. Muse also doesn’t have any type of dummy text generator” (Gaines, 2014). I believe these forms of blanks would have been more helpful. There are some widgets that was not required for my website such as that of FAQ Box widget, the Genius Gallery and more. Consider the functionality of the genius gallery. In the genius gallery, a part of the image or a photograph would be displayed in a way that it is highlighted compared to the rest. This is specially for creative travel photographers like me who want to show off some aspect in the photography. However, at present there was no need to use these widgets. The advantage of Muse is that I could later add this functionality is need be. So a form of extensibility is hence created here. In achieving a better target audience, another thing that I would probably focus on later is that of having some way to present social media widgets. Muse also offered extensibility in these points.
As a personal experience in using Muse for the first time, and as an aspect in my learning process, I believe that the use of these widgets were helpful for me. In the past, I have focused on websites with basic templates and working from scratch. In my current website creation, I learnt how it is to add interactive functionalities through Muse. I was also able to achieve the simplicity that I required. Learning (as in the sense of reading) about the required design trade-offs that have to be made when one is creating a website, does not quite capture the design process. In working hand-on in the design of the website, in making the decisions individually and in thinking of the future of the designs as in how to make it more extensible, I believe I learnt my work in a practical way.
