In watching the movie in current times, it is still enthralling because of the way the scenes are created. The plot in itself is twisted, and it follows the story of Dr. Caligari who makes use of a somnambulist in order to commit murders when he meets people he does not like. Now the reason for the murders in itself is not that clearly represented. For instance, a clerk questions the doctor and the next thing is he gets murdered by the somnambulist. A man who is the friend of the protagonist questions the somnambulist about when he will die, and he dies by dawn just as predicted. There is so much uncertainty in why death occurs, and this is the horror of the story. Deaths seemed to occur for no reason, and simply questioning the doctor resulted in death.

In the case of Caligari, the form of weird lines, tall objects on which people are shown to sit, the uncomfortable corridors of walk space, the house structures, the small dimensions and more make the audience uncomfortable and create an unsettling feel. It makes them anxious and this anxiety was truly reflective of the identity of Germany post first world war.
