One member of our team can be considered an isolate. This was more noticeable in the group forming stages. This was a team member who was disinterested or at least appeared disinterested and would agree to everything that was said without contributing much to the conversations. As Kellerman (2008) argued isolates are usually completely detached and do not know or care about the leader. In the team work case, the isolate did not care what strategy was adopted by the leader or how it would have an impact on work. The student just followed the leader as the work was delegated without much interest. The second form of follower is who is called the bystander. The bystander is one that will not participate, but observed what was done. This applied to most of us in the initial forming stage of the group. We spoke little, participated little and were mostly observant about what was happening with the other team members.

Finally, there is yet another followership style which overlaps more with the effective leadership. This is the participant followership style. The participant followers are more engaged, and are seen to either favour the leaders and organizations or will oppose them, but show they are engaged in some way (Kellerman, 2008; Bennis, 2010). In the team norming stage, almost all of us were following the participant followership style. This participant followership state coincided heavily with the effective follower. A participant follower knows when to engaged, when to serve and when to be subservient, just as an effective follower (Vecchio, 2007). Similarly, it is argued that an effective follower will know when to leave a challenge or when to walk away from questioning something. I believe this trait of effective followers is also observed in the case of participant followers.
