Some of the disadvantages of the dominant party system (as was seen in the United Kingdom’s past during Margaret Thatcher’s ruling) lies in how the dominant government becomes almost complacent during their proceedings. There is a sense of political arrogance noted at the time as the party in rule assumes they would not be replaced. As an example consider the Thatcher Government in United Kingdom. Margaret Thatcher, the Conservative Party leader was the first woman to be in the position of Prime Minister from the year 1979 (Quinn, 2013). Some of the radical reforms that were brought in her time were that of the reduction in the social welfare programs and also the reduction of unionization or the power of the unions. This form of a radical reform and policy that was issued by the dominant party was what led to the resignation of Thatcher in 1991. Power struggles in her own party was cited to be the cause behind her resignation (Margaret Thatcher Biography (1925-2013), 2015). This policy making that the Thatcher government was seen to introduce came to be viewed as a form of flagrancy of the power that was given to the conservatives. An overwhelming rejection of the conservatives was encountered by the party in 1997, but the rejection of the political leader as part of the interparty dynamics happened in 1991 itself. This is yet another problem that was seen in the context of a dominant party, it leads to many inter-party struggles where people were actively vying for leadership and position when they should have been vying to improve the state. In the case of the Conservative Government rule the state machinery has become more automatic, and instead of the Government civil servants working with the Government and being rewarded for their achievements, the Government Civil servants actually lost their name, they became mere rubber stamps when they just implemented the party policies (Anderson, 1998).

This happening is mentioned as a dominant party system example in the history of the United Kingdom (UK is an established multiparty system), however the disadvantages or problems that are noted for the dominant party system of the United Kingdom during the time period of 1979 to 1997 could just as easily be stated to be the problems of the single party system. Similar to the single party system there was not much voice for minority members, (note: in the case of the single party there would be no other party, on the other the multiparty-dominant party can have minority parties). The labour party in the 1980’s was in complete disarray and this was one reason why the Conservative party was strengthened. At present however it cannot be stated that Britain has a dominant party, it has a multiparty system, although in the context of early 2000 it was contended that the labour Government was having a vast majority and hence was politically free (Quinn et al, 2011). In the more current situations the UK government and policy making are supported by a balanced multi party system and the major regions such as Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own respective political majorities.
