A child’s social circle is fairly narrow and he/she considers the family to be center of being. But during adolescence, peers become more influential and increasingly important where the adolescent spends more and more time with peers than with the family. This peer culture is important in a child’s life and during this period the influence that parents have on their children is a debatable issue. While adapting to this shift in orientation, problems between parents and children appear. For instance, a phenomenon called generational dissonance may occur in families that are not native to the culture. While children may want to spend more time with peers, parents tend to not accept it citing familial obligations. Thus different expectations from a child’s adolescence by parents can lead to arguments (Steinberg, 2011, p.125).

Parents generally are overly concerned when their adolescents become increasingly preoccupied with their friends. This stems from the underlying fear of parents that their children may fall under negative impact and reject the familial bonding, beliefs and values. It is quite true, and the fear just in the sense that peer influence can be either positive or negative (Steinberg, 2011). Part of identity development of adolescents is a reflection of the peer group they engage with. And their engagement is to those groups that tend to have behavioral patterns that are similar to their own which again is a result of parental influence. Good parenting practices involve the selection of environments that is deemed appropriate for their adolescent and where it is possible for the parents to exert indirect control over adolescents through their peer affiliations. This is most important because if the peer group regards academic achievement as nerdy behavior and involves in academic disengagement, alcoholic behavior and drug abuses, then it is likely that adolescents deviate from the right path (Steinberg, 2011, p.155).
