The foundational discussion of sustainability starts with the Brundtland definition of sustainable development. “Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (IISD, 2017, para. 1). The three pillars of sustainability offer a more popular understanding of this Brundtland definition of sustainability. The three pillars are environmental sustainability, economic sustainability and social sustainability. Sustainability is the ability to continue a defined and established behaviour consistently and indefinitely, which shows adherence to the three pillars of sustainability. Sustainability with respect to the environment refers to the ability to make use of natural resources in a way that pollution creation, usage or resource depletion will meet indefinite usage needs. Economic sustainability refers to the capability of the company that enables it to have an indefinite economic support for the company. Finally, the third pillar of social sustainability refers to the ability of a company that adds to the social wellbeing of the people whom it affects (Azapagic & Perdan, 2000).

This is the conceptual foundation, but sustainability has been critically analysed from many perspectives over the years and not just at concept level. The more famous analysis is the one done within the context of Corporate Social Responsibility CSR. The expanded realm in which the concept came to be discussed led to the rejection of the Brundtland definition on the grounds that it only referred to sustainable development. It has already given social development more importance than environmental conservation. Of the three pillars, the social pillar will be strengthened as the focus is on development. The University of Alberta in its drive to sustainability offers a more balanced definition when they state that “sustainability is the process of living within the limits of available physical, natural and social resources in ways that allow the living systems in which humans are embedded to thrive in perpetuity” (McGill, 2013, p.3). Therefore, sustainability is the course of action where equal importance is given to conserving physical, natural and social resources so as to enable them to continue in perpetuity. It is typically the responsibility of both the corporate individual and the corporate management to ensure that the ideologies of three pillars of sustainability are met in their policy formulations.
