關於什麼構成一個好老師，可以給出許多定義。教學可以採取多種形式。然而，在學術環境中，教師需要具備一定的基本條件。教師要想發揮作用，必須具備一定的前提條件。首先，也最重要的是，教師應該對這門學科有所瞭解。對學科有一定的瞭解是基本的前提。只有這樣，老師才能傳授知識給別人(Borko & putman 1995)。除了對學科的學術知識，教師還應該瞭解學生。教師應該對學生及其能力有基本的認識。他們應該能夠根據學生的能力和可用的資源來管理教學。專家型教師能夠識別學科的基本術語、內容知識和知識的實際應用(Woolfolk&Margetts2016)。
Good Teacher characteristics
Numerous definitions can be given as to what constitutes to be a good teacher. Teaching can be approached in many forms. Nevertheless, in the academic environment there is a need for the teachers to have certain primary requisite. Certain prerequisite factors are required for the teachers to be effective. First and foremost, it must be that teachers should have the knowledge about the subject. Having knowledge about the subject is the basic prerequisite. Only then can the teachers impart knowledge to others (Borko & putman 1995). Apart from academic knowledge about the subject, teachers should also have knowledge about students. Teachers should have fundamental awareness of the student and their ability. They should be able to manage to teach based on the ability of the students and the resources available. Expert teacher can identify the essential jargons of their subject, content knowledge and practical applications of knowledge (Woolfolk&Margetts2016).
Developing a robust lesson Plan and effective teaching is another integral aspect. Lesson planning is a creative process, which provides a framework for purposeful learning. It can get students think and it allows them to interact and ask questions and help the particular students in their classes learn successfully. Reys (2012) describe that envisioning and developing an effective roster is the primary aspect of teaching. Wholesome lesson plans give teacher a confidence of knowing and developing the teaching content based on those aspects (Smith 2015).Successful teaching depends on effective planning. From developing the roster of lesson plan, teachers can make dynamic changes based on the inherent nature of the situation. This aspect is one of the hallmark teaching skills of a good teacher.
After developing knowledge and roster i.e. timetable for the lesson plan, there should be effective delivery of the subject. Ideally teachers should be able to listen carefully to students, make analysis of their comments and questions, and give feedbacks accordingly (Smith 2015).
Reys (2012) states that in education stream such as mathematics, communication is ideal. Learning is demonstrated by the fact that communication is one of the main aims of the Australian Curriculum (AITSL 2011).
