　　Australian Labour leader, Bill Shorten’s speech on inequality crisis in
Australia, at Economic and Social Conference in Melbourne on 21st July 2017, had
a powerful appeal with right use of rhetoric. The speech targeted at the
conservative political mindset of government (opposition), by making inequality
crisis as the centre of Shorten’s electoral campaign. The sentence is an excerpt

and situations (Condor et al., 2013). He stressed people to be well informed and
ready for change. The first part of the sentence indicates that his party is set
to announce major tax policies with the objective of reforming tax concessions
on capital gains and negative capital gearing (The Age, 2017).

　　The second part of the sentence “I think people are hungry for something
more substantial than the current political fare”, demonstrates that his
government is prepared to take necessary political risks, required for bridging
the gap created by inequality (The Age, 2017). He made it clear in the sentence
that his Labour government would have a more activist and philosophical approach
rather than a laissez faire (“left alone”) approach. He encouraged the people of
Australia to be more politically aware with this sentence. With usage of
positive words like “Australians are smart enough for that conversation” he
pointed to the educated Australian tax payers to win their support. He spoke
about free industrial development for future workforce, as he knew what the
people desire in the current age of their growing discontent with political
leaders.

　　This report is a coherent study of political rhetoric and its use by
different leaders to gain public support. In my opinion, Trump’s use of rhetoric
was more to persuade the public more by deceiving and misleading them. Thus, I
identify more with Mr. Bill Shorten, as his sentence “I think people are hungry
for something more substantial” clearly synchronizes with his intent to win
public support. However, his positive use of words would help him win the same
as he talks about reforms in the tax system for future progress of the country
with new investments in infrastructure and human capital. Hence, without
devaluing or demeaning anyone, he has been successful in pointing out at the
countries conservative and stuck political environment.
