In Japan, SIA has worked with Red Cross Hospitals to meet community need in health care. The Harapan Rainforest is located in the Jambi South Sumatran provinces in the Indonesian country. SIA works on restoring the bio-diverse ecosystem within the Harapan rainforest. SIA paired up with the Ecosystem Restoration Concession ERC and also the Ministry of Forestry in Indonesia. The project does six main things.
Firstly, it introduced a Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Toll for monitoring illegal logging, fires and poaching. Secondly, it has worked with the Ministry of Forestry and the Forest Fire Management System to install early warning mechanisms in the hotspots for fire. Fire control and management became easier as a consequence. Restoration efforts are done with local community and around 4000 hectares have benefitted because of this. Fourthly, field offices are set up for direct access to biodiversity hotspots. Fifthly, community land use is managed by means of sharing information with indigenous tribes. The Baitin Sembilan is the major tribe here and more than 200 families from this tribe have agreed to use land and resources more sustainably. Finally, elephant conservation initiatives have also been taken up.
