The main role of an international manager is to operate and control the overseas operations of a multinational company. In this regards, I believe that international managers must possess the ability to develop global thinking in delivering goods and services to the rest of the world. Based on my self-assessment, I possess some soft skills which would prove to be useful for me as an international manager such as to work in international teams, to adapt to new situations, to be sensitive to different cultures and to develop relationships. I have experienced a unique situation in which I was to work with a multicultural team on a common project of product development. The major problem that I faced was a language barrier as most of my views and opinions could not be conveyed to my fellow colleague and a team mate who hailed from China. Since none of the team members knew Chinese, it was practically impossible for us to come to a concrete decision.

It was then that my team leader decided to appoint a translator as he could not risk dismissing the Chinese team members. However, he took a step forward in suggesting the higher authority to organize a linguistic training programme for multicultural employees so that they are able to learn English. What I learned was that communication is crucial and in problem situation, an international manager or leader must effectively solve the issue using his problem-solving skills. During the course of working in a reputed company, I had developed an issue in communicating my views with colleagues. This is because of the language barrier and lack of knowledge of different cultures. The face-negotiation theory suggests that it is important to understand the different cultures so that an effective rapport can be maintained (Oetzel and Ting-Toomey, 2003). However, in times of disagreements, it is the face that represents self-image which most people tries not to reveal with the fear of conflict. I am inherent with this problem and lack the skills of developing effective interpersonal relations with multicultural colleagues. One of my strengths includes my sensitivity towards cultural diversity for which I have never discriminated among any employee from a different culture. In this regarding, I have effectively worked with team members from Japan, China and India with proper coordination to develop an international marketing strategy to promote a product in Italy. While I faced language and communication barrier, I appreciated the way my fellow colleagues worked as a team to accomplish the task.
