The movie, Hunger Games, has much appeal among the younger generation. It is part of the teen fiction series of a book of the same name. The movies appeal to the younger generation because of the way it presents most of their energy levels, their act of rebelliousness, their almost stupid daring bravery and more. An analysis of the hunger games is based on the feminist lens and the power lens reveal the elements of connection with the real world. When viewed through the feminist lens, the main character is about Katniss who is not a typical woman. How this story relates to me is about how one views women in current times.
In current times, there are still existing stereotypes about woman. In the career front for instance, there are some executive positions that women have still not occupied and according to many media and research articles, some amount of gender stereotyping exists even in the most liberal of organizations. Now, in the Hunger games, when choosing a male and a female under the age of 18 to fight, no such discrimination has been made to not select a female. Katniss is not the typical female, and she takes up her position instead of her sister. Now this is something that I would relate, too. Elder siblings are almost always instinctively protective of their younger siblings.
The feminist lens furthermore reveals a girl who has taken charge of her households at a very early age and has taken responsibilities in her household such as keeping the house, hunting, trading, etc. This is felt even more as it is contrasted with her younger sister who is typically at the other end of the gender spectrum. This is interesting, as in the feminist lens, there is something to appreciate and then there is something to criticize in the movie. The first at the other end of the spectrum, almost looks upon Katniss as a mother figure. The power lens is also the more predominant one. The theme of power is obviously high here as this is a form of power than can command a young girl and a boy to be selected to fight to death as part of the hunger games. Power however is not just presented as one central power retraining everybody. It is in fact presented as a restrain on each of the individuals at some time.
In addition to the power lens and the feminist lens, the main element of the movie is the dystopian way it has represented the future. Children scrounge for food and are controlled by people in order to fight for their entertainment. This dystopian vision is not much different from what happens in different parts of the world where children are still scrounging for food. Therefore, the movie in essence draws from facts, but presented them as dystopian fiction. This is a connection that the reader can make at all times. At all times when watching the movie, too, it is possible to understand the real-world connection that has been written into the movie.
