Both transactional and transformational leadership situations were observed in our teamwork. These leadership style theories are dependent on the type of work being done and the relationship that exists between the leader and the follower. For instance, in the transactional leadership theory, the exchanges between the leader and the follower are important. The working relationship is often identified as one that the leader identified as his/her assessment of group, goals and more. They will issue work, punishments and rewards once this assessment is done. In such a group work, the follower I left with very responsibility and just carry out their part of the transactions as required by their leader. In contemporary organizations, this form of a transactional leadership is observed in those work scenarios where low skilled workers are present.

Low skilled workers would not take up much responsibility or accountability for their work, and hence, it is necessary to spell out the work to them. Procedures are defined clearly and work moves on a protocol form with instructions from the leader serving to guide them. In our group, a transactional form of leadership was required at times. We aimed at managing work performance and wanted to stick to target goals. Therefore, even though we wanted to diversify the way we approached tasks or interacted, it was necessary to have well defined protocols. Our selected leader was able to balance our need to be interactive, and diversified in our working perspectives, with that of achieving the end goal. Transactional leadership ensured that our tasks were well defined, assigned and accomplished within the needed time. Hence, the idea that transactional leadership can only be applied to situation of low skilled workers is not proper. It can be used according to workplace context, and what needs to be achieved.
