The great Canadian flag debate was one of the most emotional issues that the Canadians debated. Prior to the maple leaf jack, there was the Union Jack that had been symbolized to be a part of Canadas identity. However, after the World War I, there was strong development of nationalism. In 1925, Mackenzie King started the idea of a new flag design. Nevertheless, during that time period, the people were not able to arrive at a conclusion regarding the flag as the British identity was also embedded into the design. Post the Second World War, the issue gained revival. The English Members of the parliament (MP) wanted the Union Jack flag. The French MPs were against the old flag. The King intervened and put the matter to rest.

In the year 1963, Pearson was a strong proponent to bring the changes and introduce a Canadian flag. He wanted a flag that had both French and English symbolisms into the design. Basically, the arguments were not about having a new flag it was based on the design. The French-Canadian members wanted to have a part of the Canadian identity . The English-speaking members of the parliament felt hat the flag already honours the founding fathers. The Union jack was considered to be the Canton of Honours. Pearson wanted a design that demoted a Canada that did not have colonial association. Diefenbaker opposition towards the Flag was that he wanted to maintain the original identity of Canada. He wanted to honour the founding members of the nation. The opposition argued that the history of Canada was intertwined with the British identity and hence did not want to change the original design of the Flag.
