The form is as follows. First movement is a standard sonata. The sonata form achieves the formalism for the work, but there is a strong main theme throughout the music that is inspired from Armenian sonorities. Folk tint is present as the sonata form in itself has been improvised. The second theme transitions from the main theme and is more of an improvised folk tune. The repetitive tunes create a form of signature gesture reminiscent with most Khachaturian’s music. A semi-droning bass is found in the work which is part of Khachaturian’s trademarks. The folk theme is perhaps more oft repeated trademark, and in this music piece, much of the characteristic element in this work was drawn from Khachaturian’s earlier improvisations. Improvisations of variety, timbre, Eastern instrumental music, rhythmic ostinato and other folk instruments that Thatcherian heard as a child such as thesazandartar, qyamancha and drum come into play.

The second movement in the Piano concerto is more soulful and is marked as being con anima, literally meaning with soul. Where the opening part of the piano concerto appeals to a wide audience with its more formal sonata, the second movement is more of an emotional connection. It is marked by variations in folk music. Armenian melody is played on the bass clarinet. The music here is culturally inspired as Khachaturian himself notes that the melody was encountered by him when he visited Tbilisi. The original composition he had was modified and the melody inspired from his visit came to be used. The use of multiple music inspirations results in a unique orchestration here. The violin melody for instance is a flexatone and the percussion instrument presents a more eerie sounding vibration.
