The assessment of a person’s performance in the tenets of summative assessment is done by writing tests. It is very important to evaluate and classify students in the form of numbers. Summative assessment is often used to assess scores and grades. This is conducive to teachers and learners to have more intuitive understandings of learning outcomes. There are numerous advantages when a summative assessment is considered in the academic arena. A few of them are mentioned below.
For teachers, this would give them a chance to know if the students have understood the important fundamentals of the subject (Qu & Zhang, 2013). A summative assessment follows certain strategies for assessment by means of assignments and tests. By these ways, teachers can gain understanding of how the students have learned and understood the subject. An assignment assessment is said to be a summative one by the way it is utilized. This is however, not by the design of the test, assignment or by self-assessment. It is a significant tool for assessment. Summative assessments are considered as tools, as they have the capability to evaluate the usefulness of any program. They work towards the improvement of the school or institution. They are helpful in aligning curriculum (Berry, 2011).. This is also are helpful for the students to get placed in appropriate programs. They assist a lot as they offer a lot of information in classroom level. The other advantage of summative assessment is that they help in making instructional adjustments and interventions during the process of learning. The results of summative assessments are recorded as scores or grades into the students’ academic records. They can be in the format of test scores, letter grades, or report cards which can be used in college admission process. Many schools, districts, and courses regard summative assessment as a major parameter in the grading system. Moreover, assessment is done on professionalism, classroom climate, planning, instruction, preparation and more. It gives the teacher the tools to evaluate the student to achieve their target (Shinkfield & Daniel, 1995). Furthermore, course-placement decisions are also made with summative assessment.
For students who score well, it boosts individual confidence. The presence of summative assessment is a motivator for it aids the individuals and offers them an opportunity to develop a learning environment. This is an assessment meant for learning that is on the basis of outcome. Maximizing the students learning is vital because it is an indication of goodwill from both teachers and students (Stufflebeam, Daniel & Anthony Shinkfield, 2007). The weak areas can be identified by the summative assessment. With the help of summative assessment results, the students and teachers can find out weak areas where the results are steadily low. There are also certain limitations of this model, which are explained in the following.
