Safety and quality of nursing care
Ageing has led the registered nurses to create inequalities within the nursing environment. Life expectancy of people has increased in the last few centuries and this has posed numerous challenges to healthcare resources in the method of caring elders with long term requirements. Many registered nurses show lack of interests in transitional care (Aase et al, 2013). Sometimes, nurses deny the differential treatment that is mandatory for the senior citizens. At several instances, it is seen that patients with multiple disorders are not offered the necessary treatments. The admission also transitions from the primary care to secondary care without any focus on quality of care offered to them.
Many nurses develop negative experiences for the patients. This shows the lack of quality in nursing education. Most of the nurses do not demonstrate patience and hence, lack the listening skills and understanding to offer further treatments. They also create higher anxiety in the elderly care division. Registered nurses with low self esteem are likely to worsen the internal environment of the hospitals (North and Fiske, 2012). In developed countries where there is quality education on geriatrics and potential nursing boards, the situation is friendly. In other cases, the registered nurses pay less attention to the quality and safety of the elderly patients.
Colleagues from health care team
Nurses are found to be at the sharp end of the patient care. When the nurse leaders create destructive behaviors and stereotypes about the elderly, it is likely that the health care team is also vulnerable to such behaviors and discriminatory elements. The ageist behavior of a registered nurse can influence the colleagues from health care team in several ways.
– The nurses are bullied for attending the elderly patients.
– Nurses spend derogatory messages about the elderly patients to the colleagues and hence, the patient receives poor comments that make the environment unfriendly (Williams, 2009)
– Lack of professionalism of one nurse can directly affect the rest of colleagues in the team which can affect the relationship between patient and physician
The ageist behavior of registered nurse can create disruptive behaviors of colleagues and expose them to verbal abuse.
