  The various organic substances that are present in surface waters also
contain algal cells and organic compounds from algae, which are present in the
water undergoing disinfection. For surface waters which are eutrophic in nature
including reservoirs and rivers, the total amount of organic matter thus
obtained is substantial as a result of the algal substances which are
contributed to the overall aqueous organic content. The presence of algae in
water has been found to be significant, irrespective of whether the water is
treated or untreated. Initially, there has been little amount of evidence
regarding the interrelationship which exists between algal presence and HAA
formation (Agori et al., 2015). The different algal species namely
Anaebenafos-aquae and Microcystisaeruginosa are supposed to be the chief
contributors towards the formation of HAA in treated water. The different algal
cells and the various metabolic products that are obtained from them comprises
of the EOM or extracellular organic matter including cells and filtrate are
generally chlorinated maintaining a series of conditions, which helps to
estimate their amount of production and thereby correspond to HAA formation (Ali
et al., 2014).

  Further investigation on the role of bromide during HAA formation and
speciation has revealed a variation of algal compounds and HAA formation for the
different algal cells. In case of Anabena sp, mono HAA was the most predominant
form of HAA which occurred in the early phases of growth. However, di and Tri
HAA are documented to be present but only in the later phases of growth. In the
EOM samples, mono HAA happens to be the only class of HAA which dominates
throughout the life cycle.
