The case study has been about the retail industry of Australia and the issues in the retail industry. Focusing on the profits within the retail industry, it has made many of the companies in this industry take up to unethical practices and practices which border on illegal participation. The research work highlighted some of the major companies that took part in this, and this was an interesting research mainly because of how it highlighted some everyday retail centres as having been unethical at some point. Research on their working showed how these retailers lost their image with consumers and with time, efforts were able to reinvest efforts to bring up their name.
A new insight gained from this research was that it would be beneficial for the companies to actually work on some long-term strategy to improve relationships with consumers instead of just focusing on profit (Woodruff, 1997). Driving down costs is indeed a way to connect with the customer, but then this is not the only way. When profits and costs to customers are the only focus, it becomes easy for the companies to become unethical. Companies should hence focus on long term strategies that would help them.
Much of the research for this work was taken up by making use of the references that were already presented in the case study. These references directly lead to the required resources to answer the questions. In the case of ACCC and to understand some legal issues, it was also necessary to read up on some websites as well. This helped in answering the questions in a better way.
