The incidence of eating disorders is increasing. It is considered to be a severe psychological difficulty that leads to various other physical and psychological issues. There are various types of eating disorders, the most common of which are Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Binge eating disorder. There are many causes of eating disorders, some of which are biological factors and some of which are psychological factors. The treatments of eating disorders include medicinal therapy, emotional therapy, and mixed therapy. Eating disorders are increasingly becoming an epidemic. In order to address this epidemic, effective prevention plan and treatment plans are needed.
Patients of anorexia nervosa must be handled on an outpatient basis with the psychological treatment given by a separate service that is competent in providing the specific treatment required for the patients of anorexia nervosa. Besides this, the physical needs of the patient with an eating disorder must be analyzed properly. Families suffering from anorexia nervosa should be offered psychological treatment for living a better and healthy life as well.
A patient with bulimia nervosa should be encouraged to pursue an evidence-based self-help session. These patients can benefit from the use of antidepressant drugs. Cognitive behavioral therapy can also be effective for the bulimia nervosa patient.
For every possible type of eating disorder, family members should be included in the treatment plan of the patient. Doing so helps to improve the patient’s psychological conditions and help prevent other family members from getting the disease.
