Guimerà’s Terra Baixa was a masterpiece from the Romantic Catalan movement, “Renaixença”, introducing many important elements of social realism. The masterpiece is known for completing the tragic trilogy of the author including La Filla del Mar and Maria Rosa. Irrespective of the fact that it was written in Catalan language, its first premiere took place in Spanish. The translation was done by Jose de Echegaray in Madrid in the year 1896 with its premiere held at Tortosa in 1897 (Esculies, 2015).
Social realities of a small rural town in Catalonia were depicted in the play. The main character, Martha, is in love with Sebastià, who has lordship of the town. Martha is forced to marry Manelic, a shepherd, as per the plan of Sebastià. His key purpose was stopping rumors regarding the relationship between Sebastià and Martha for marrying a rich heiress. The play was a combination of incipient literary realism and romanticism which provided crucial themes during the Catalan literary movement (Pregelj and Kozak, 2011).
As the play was highly significant for promoting the language Catalan, its adaptive release was made in a number of forms such as musical, television and film. Since then, the significance of Catalan language is already rising but its significance in the 21st century has increased in the superficial ephemeral age. The play can be considered significant for the 21st century Britain as the play is strong evidence calling upon the replacement of superficial glance through observations carefully. The essay will conclude that there is still relevance of Guimerà’s Terra Baixa in the 21st century Britain as there is a need for Catalan people to experience and embrace their own cultural identity.
It is the right of people for getting close to one another, understanding one another and engaging in longer interchange. The book culture, literature and language help in expressing the identity and having strong roots in the same (Sobrer, 1999). Understanding Catalan culture reveals major cultural histories of Britain that are always involved in backward avoidance. However, there have been evolutions even in case of difficult scenarios. Vitality, dynamism and modernity are key attributes of this culture which has been described in Guimerà’s Terra Baixa.
