Photographic Journalism combines humanity and the disturbing political conditions of those places. Another picture of a hand of a starving child and the hand a missionary worker shows that though there are humanitarians around the world for this cause. The picture is able to bring an alarm to the internal clock of many viewers by wanting to actually service the starving children. Another picture where a one year old infant covers the mouth of the mother shows indicates the silent suffering of the people. The critique of namelessness could be enhanced when analysing the next awarded photograph, the World Press Photo in 1980 (above). Here the photograph has been taken in Uganda’s Karamoja District by Mike Wells (UK). It is that of ‘a starving boy and a missionary’ (Malkki, 1996). Here there is a metaphoric nature used. A starving child is reinforced through framing techniques and here there is no face of either the child or the missionary who is to save him.

There is but a hand in another hand. The hand is frail and the hand by itself denotes the suffering. There is a binary opposition technique that is employed here where the photograph contrasts both in colour and the frail nature of the hand. These are photos that are reproduced in a political context. here it can be seen that specific cultural and political connections are being based on as “they take part in reproducing and establishing a tradition of photography in which certain contextual events in Africa are extrapolated from the specific social and political contexts and re-embedded into an abstract story of globality” (Lury, 1998) wherein the child becomes a nameless entity (Boltanski, 1999). The child is a metaphor for his suffering. This could have been the hand of any child and not necessarily the child represented here,“Consequently, the child becomes a metaphoric and generic figure that works as a medium for overcoming differences. Within this framework, the hand or the face of the starving child becomes the hand or a face of any child” (Ahmed, 2010).
