According to Winston (1995), core subjects that are discussed in a documentary as well as the representation and reflection of a documentary that makes an overall process and how all these things are put together practically for the purpose of making a documentary always fascinated me. Not only documentaries can be highly entertaining and inspirational but they can also be highly informative and can give an in-depth analysis for a particular subject matter with perfection. Documentaries are made for various motives, especially in today’s world, where hybrid documentaries are made for the purpose of delivering a modern definition. There isn’t actually one definition of documentary. Rather there are multiple definitions and each definition contributes differently and facilitates in recognizing assorted views. The definitions are from three different kind of people’s view, that is, filmmaker, text and spectator. Moreover, it has also been observed that documentaries are much more complicated regarding their style of representation. Furthermore, there are four kinds of representations: reflexive, interactive, expository and observational. All of these four kinds of representations have their own description and representation. I must say that the most interesting thing for me while studying for making a documentary was the four modes of democracy and representation that were addressed by Bill Nicholas when he was explaining about “representing reality”. By evaluating and analyzing the four modes of representation in a documentary, one can critically analyze documentaries and can also evaluate the issues that are related to production as well as ethical and moral concerns of a documentary (Nichols, 1991). All in all, documentary is much more than putting the reality on the screen, because it involves a complex media form to be interpreted

To critically evaluate and analyze documentaries from a personal point of view, I decided to watch a few interesting documentaries. To begin with, I watched “Fahrenheit 9/11” directed by Michael Moore. According to Nolley (2005), it is an expository film that provides a critical view of the presidency of George W. Bush, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and the overall coverage of these wars in media. Through this documentary, Moore has portrayed that the media never provided a rational or subjective analysis of the war in Iraq and the innocent people that had dies there as a result. Through this film, Moore had portrayed a thorough impact for familiar material by giving contrasting views on America’s war against terrorism.
