Weaknesses

A major weakness of the company is their complex supply chain because of the large number of products of different companies that are offer at their stores. The brand image of the company has been weakening because people feel that the giant retailer is eating away the local businesses.

The company also has an image of lacking corporate social responsibility in the form of being less environment friendly, and lacking respect towards the employees.

Despite being the largest retail company, they have not been able to adapt to the culture of many countries where they have started their business. This has made Walmart restrict its business to a small scale in many of the countries where it operates (Copeland, 2013).

Opportunities

Their online order taking services should also be extended outside of the United States. The company should promote a responsible image by treating its employees with more respect. They should participate in community welfare on a large scale, and collaborate and develop strategic alliances with local businesses to help them sustain in the presence of Walmart.

Threats

The company being a global brand faces stringent competition from both global and local players. This puts constant pressure on the company to develop strategies to maintain its customer base.

Since outsourcing options for firms have increased over the years, the cost of products have decreased dramatically, and thus lead to an intense price competition among the retailers.

VRINE Model

The VRINE model could also be used to employ an internal analysis of causes of success of the company. The model include testing of various competency aspects such as value, rarity, exploitability, and inimitable and non-sustainability (Hill & Jones, 2009).
