Architecture of expressionist nature was a movement in the domain of architecture which developed across Europe during 20th century first decades in alignment with performing arts and expressionist visuals which specifically enhanced and grew in Germany (Mumford 1954). Expressionism further developed as a style of avant-garde prior to World War I and remained to be famous especially in Berlin. Further the art extended to various other art ranges such as architecture, painting, literature, theatre and dance as well. However there also existed expressions and abstractions in the art history of Australia (Gombrich 2002). There is also less information about Sydney which is known as a manifestation center neither is there any study registered on the promotion of art in NSW, Australia. Instead, the contemporary art history in Australia has consistently focused on modernism figuratively and the Melbourne contemporary art society achievements.

The architecture style of expressionistic modernism describe an architecture type which makes use of building forms as a medium to evoke sensitivities of architect’s inner feelings (Evans 2005). Such architectural tendencies of expressionism have been evident in the architecture of Australia such as the city of Canberra developed and integrated by Griffin’s. There are other architects from the same century that have worked to provoke expressionism and add value such as Edmond and Corrigon. This essay has been developed in order to focus on the ways in which expressionistic tendencies are depicted in Australian architecture in order to evoke genuine moments of revolt (Hamann 1993). The essay thesis statement furthermore will be explored through the works by the Griffins by comparing the same with the work of the Mcintyre’s Edmond and Corrigan as well as Robin Boyd to obtain a general status of expressionist tendencies in Australian architecture. The structure of this essay will comprise of providing evidence on expressionistic tendencies and then to relate these tendencies with the reason behind the motivation of the architect in order to develop such expressionistic architecture in Australia. A major part of this essay is also based on the articles by Mumford and Gombrich, namely “Sticks and Stones” and “The Preference for the primitive episodes in the history of western taste”.
