In trying to befriend their adolescent children, parents begin a problem wherein setting rules and standards become difficult. Negative personal confessions of parents who try to buddy their adolescence can reflect negatively on children. For instance, when a divorcee mother confides in her adolescent daughter about the relationship and economic conflicts that she is facing, the daughters tend to experience an increased level of emotional distress (Dewar, 2009). For when they undergo the physical changes of puberty, a sense of doubt about self-image and looks are formed (Steinberg, 2011, p.247). This is a stage where bickering and difference in opinions between parents and adolescents increase. Young adolescents need to know that people are there for them, who communicate openly with them and those who spend time with them. This provides with the sense of being valued and which will reflect in the way they behave outside. Also, adolescents who receive exceptional support from parents even tend to be less involved in peer groups. A little praise when they perform well and encouragement to achieve higher would influence the way they perform. Children need to be treated as individuals who are capable of self-thinking and are in need of somebody with whom they can share their ideas and hopes. On the other hand when parents share a little of their own thinking neglecting those parts that are likely to distress them, there forms a healthy relationship between parents and adolescents (Dewar, 2009).
