Film and drama in Korea- an Analysis of Cultural Aspects, Local and Global Significance
The Globalization as well as the Glocalisation of the Korean Drama is assessed as follows.
The scenario took a positive turn in the 1980’s when the government relaxed its control over the Films, and for the very first time, the Korean Film industry began to gain popularity on an international level. The film director became the first director from Korea to showcase Films in the European film festivals and also brought several International laurels to Korea. From then on the Korean film industry knew no bounds of success and has been thriving till date. The government control has become vey less and the industry has received success at the local box office equivalent rather exceeding at many occasions, the blockbusters movies of Hollywood. The biggest success of all was the film Shiri, which exceeded the collections of some remarkably successful movies like Titanic and The matrix. Other major successes of this time are Joint Security Area, Friend and My Sassy Girl. The trend continues, and the Korean Film Industry is till date able to produce movies which have achieved tremendous success to the extent that the American film industry (Hollywood) have requested rights to remake the movies My Wife is a Gangster, Mare (remade as The Lake House), Oldboy, My Sassy Girl, A Tale of Two Sisters and Joint Security Area . Some the Korean film industry’s works that claimed distinction and honor are– Oasis at the Venice Film Festival, Oldboy at the Cannes Film Festival, the director Kim Ki Duk at the Berlin Film Festival (Lindsay Hansen, 2006). However, the domestic success of the Korean films is attributed to the government laws which limits the number the movies to be imported from other countries.
